  1. In terms how how we survive, I think we survive by finding something that gives us a reason to persevere, such as a goal to reach for or a drum kit like the guy in the clip we watched in class.

  2. while I do agree that goals can motivate survival, I do think that a lot of how we survive comes from our own self motivation and self determination as opposed to outside forces.

    1. I think a solid compromise is the best answer; some people are motivated by themselves but other can be motivated by outside forces.

  3. survival to me means enduring, it doesn't mean advancing or achieving or changing, just enduring. To survive is to continue to be present however you do not need to achieve or have goals to survive, I think people find a reason to live, not survive, they survive out of extinct.

    1. I love your last statement. I think the whole "survive out of extinct" is a great way to explain it.

  4. For me, surviving is simply just living. It is doing what you do best and doing what makes you happy. But also, it can be doing something that you do not like to provide for yourself in order to buy food, or to have money for transportation etc. Surviving to me, is finding your way of living and staying on this planet (unless you want to be an astronaut, then have fun on the moon or maybe even on Mars someday), whether it makes you happy or not.

  5. To me, survival is making it through struggles in life without losing yourself in the process. The way I see survival is both mental and emotional rather than physical because although you may be able to physically make it through something, if you lose who you are in the process then i'm not sure you really survived.

    1. I really like what you said about losing yourself and I think that's an interesting way of looking at survival besides just the physical aspect of it. I think a good example of that is soldiers that return from war with ptsd because they may have physically survived but they are not themselves anymore.

  6. I believe that surviving and living are two very different things. To me, all that survival means as an individual is staying alive to see another day. I think that people see living as survival, where as to me achieving goals, personal happiness, and self worth are all just ways in which a person hopes to live, not survive. To sum it up, survival to me is just staying alive.

  9. Surviving is a relative question when it comes to one's definition. For much of my life, survival has been all about physical survival: separating the strong from the weak, hard workers and slackers, etc. Being able to physically survive in this world is about being the best that you can be and always working more. Countless hours of practice, non-stop commitment to reaching your dream. However, reaching your dream should not be a goal of yours. As Mike Stud says, "Work until you made it, then work more." I've lived much of my life by this understanding of survival and plan to keep this idea in my head. Although, a new understanding of the word survival has come clear to me now. Survival isn't about physically surviving as much as it is living. What I mean by that is survival is the minimum one can do to stay living. For example, BANG! You're lost in the middle of the Amazon. What do you do to stay living? Obviously, find some bananas and mangoes, get some clean water, find some shelter, and possibly make a fire. That is doing that minimum to survive physically. Though, we are all fortunate enough to not be in that situation so why not make the best of our lives. Give back to the community, help others, do what makes you happy. We only have a certain amount of time here and why not make the best of it? Survival, now, is all about making the best of your situation, taking as many opportunities handed to you, and being happy.

  10. I feel as though when discuss surviving, we need to dig deeper and look at surviving from not only a physical status, but a mental one as well. Those of us struggling with metal disabilities understand that surviving and being able to work as hard as we do in life is sometimes a challenge, but it's the important things in our lives (i.e. dance for me) that keeps us motivated. Throughout time many lives have been lost due to the fact that they felt that they could no longer survive. Honestly, I feel that surviving is one of the hardest things in life. I'm sure all of us have had moments of doubt as to whether to continue living (I'm not suicidal I swear). Surrounding ourselves with things we care about (sports, music, homework etc..) allows us to hold on to our lives and never let go of our overall hopes and dreams. Each of us are clearly surviving in life, but how we survive is all up to each one of us.
