In class we questioned the retelling of a dream and if we really know if it's the truth or not. I learned the word confabulator, which makes something better than it actually is, which made us ask if Manderley is everything the narrator makes it seem.
Then we discussed the characters and defined what an idea man and woman is. We defined the man as strong, rich, "good with a sword", have power (bloodline-->legacy)
The ideal woman was beautiful, domestic, mother, loving, complacent, social space, entertainment, good image)--> she just reproduces for the bloodline but doesn't take care of the children due to their class.

  1. I unpacked a passage on page five (starting with the first sentence and ending on the bottom of the page with the word freedom). Here are my notes on it:

    AOI: the past/pain
    - fear to bring up the past
    - although she tries to make is seem like she is facing her past, she is really avoiding it: “tried to forget”
    - “men and women emerge finer and stronger after suffering” (does this really happen? it seems like he is still suffering from it)
    - if she escaped the devil why is she still having dreams of manderley
    - freedom at a price
    - “keep the things that hurt to myself alone” (7): she initially made it seem as though they had gone through the pain together and were both stronger, but now it appears she is still in pain and going out it mostly alone.
