Just like the extreme differences between the west and east wing there is a huge difference in the way Maxim and Mrs. Danvers cope with Rebecca's death. Maxim tries to completely erase her from his memory while Mrs. Danvers cleans the dust off in Rebecca's rooms everyday. There is no in-between stage in their mourning. In the time that Mrs. Danvers is showing the narrator Rebecca's rooms, it seemed like the one time the narrator is learning all about Rebecca, and she feels likes she's learned too much.
Why do you think she feels like she's learned so much? Is it because of her insecurities and her constant self-comparison to Rebecca or is it something else?
ReplyDeleteSorry I didn't really specify where this was but on page 170-175 Mrs. Danvers is showing the narrator Rebecca's rooms and and she says, "I did not want to hear any more. I wanted to get away from her, away from the room" (174). I think she just feels completely weirded out about the situation, especially because she says "I feel her everywhere" and like you said, it adds to all of her insecurities because she is hearing someone talk so highly of Rebecca.
